Look Out, I'm Taking a Diversity Class

Ever since I was a kid I've been frustrated by schools' efforts to get me to connect to my European roots. I understand that we're a nation of immigrants and most people came from somewhere else, but I didn't and neither did my parents, grandparents or great-grandparents. I feel no connection to any of the many countries that I could call my cultural heritage. I've finally given up on finding a dish from my cultural heritage to bring to the "Multicultural Potluck" dinner. Now I just say, "I'm from the midwest, and we eat casserole."

I figure, if I feel that way, there has got to be people of other racial and ethnic heritages that feel the same way. Maybe they just want to say, "I'm a modern busy mom, and we order KFC." I don't know, maybe it's just me.

You are making me laugh. Seriously, no grandparents or great grandparents from another country? No banket, pea soup, baklava, gyros, cow brains, liver, nothing? No interesting ethnic food in your past at all? Fortunately our melting pot will lead to many interesting foods in your future :-)

I was first faced with this dilemma in 7th grade. I ended up taking french fries. Not because there's a wee bit of french blood in our family (like an eye dropper), but because nothing else was even remotely palatable to me - german sausage, german chocolate, sour kraut - yuck! hate them all. I took the french fries so that there would be at least one thing there that I liked. They were from McDonalds.

And, no, Nicole, Grandma Dee made mostly things that come in a box and Grandma Noam made standard midwestern fare.
